Den of cozy recycled crafting

  • Today was a hyperfixation day. After my morning pages I ended up basing, texturing, zenithal highlighting, and starting on the jackets for my turnip army.

I don’t have a lot to reflect on here, but I thought some photos would suffice.

We’re on a trip tomorrow so I’ll be playing The Tallest Goblin with Holly as my hobbying.

  • Today I actually treated myself.

I’m currently going through the book The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, and a key part of it is doing something called “The Artist’s Date.” The process itself is to do something by yourself for ~2 hours to enrich your creativity. That’s what I aimed for today. I’m not yet sure if I’d recommend the book, as there’s a fair bit of religiosity within its pages, but I’ll let you all know at the end of the typical 12-week course. But yes, the Artist’s Date today was to brave my city’s CBD, explore a few of the cheap shops, and get to my local game store.

I’ve been trying to find bits & bobs for kitbashing my swill-train, hoping for a toy train, but I did mange to find a few nautical creatures. Crab, starfish, whale, shark, dolphin, and seahorse do give me quite a few options, so I’ll get the hot glue out soon to see what fits & what works. I grabbed a few mini glass bottles too, mostly so I could make some big glass vessels for the swill to be kept in. Big oil jars, roped onto a cart or goobers walking alongside

The LGS was mostly to get myself some more hobby spray paint; I’m trying out Vallejo’s rattle cans for the first time, so we’ll see how we go with those.

I also managed to get some movement trays for my Turnip28 boys, so I think I’ll be starting to paint them in the next week or so.

Not too much more to report, but not a bad day all-in-all.

  • Not a great deal on the workbench today, but that doesn’t mean that I’m running out of steam (heh).

I’ve been thinking a bunch about the locomotive “Off the Rails” challenge again. I managed to get some sketches in earlier this week, but today I began my exploration into the 3D printing space. My current plan is to use my FDM printer to get some wheels, gears, and the … bottom bits … of the steam engines so that I can just plonk together a whole bunch of detritus upon it. Obviously thinking that it’s meant to be highly engineered, but still a disaster. The printer is running on another project at the moment so it’ll have to wait til then.

That project is where my hobby log begins. I’ve been working hard at constructing my own 3ft-by-3ft tabletop for home games, in particular solo games. I am nearly finished with the frame itself printing (each ‘square’ is 8×8 inches) and soon enough I can begin decorating. I’m going to go with a generic base because this will be something I use for Frostgrave, the full collection of Snarling Badger games, Fjord Serpents, and maybe even giving some Silver Bayonet a go. I needed a surface and I don’t’ have access to space that I can do woodworking, so this 3d printed table is the best I can do for the moment. I’ll keep you all informed at the progress

My afternoon — and presumably my tomorrow as well — has been plagued by migraines from a fairly dramatic weather shift. It’s fine mostly, but I was only able to print and glue together a rickety final cart for the swill-luggers. I think it’ll form a good base, but we’ll have to see how a bigger bashing goes in the coming days.

That’s all for today I think. I will likely have a bit of a slow day tomorrow. Maybe I’ll slap-chop something… who knows.

  • Today was a hobby stream day — and my gosh was it worth it.

I really REALLY wanted to get my Turnip28 army moving along. The recent “Off the Rails” kitbash challenge for the game has me focused on getting a game in some time this year. Fingers crossed.

Typically my streaming schedule is Sunday through Wednesday, and this month I’ve dedicated my Tuesdays to minis. I do get time to do my hobbies each day — this blog is a testament to that — but having a dedicated streaming ‘show’ each week means that I at least get an uninterrupted 3 hours of doing something. That, and streaming gives a sort of faux-body doubling effect which is wonderful.

Anyway, yes, Turnip28. This game of the glorious and the absurd has occupied far more of my brain over the last few years than it has any right to. Something about the vegetable themed post-apocalypse has broken through into my psyche, and has taken root (heh) into my very being. I think about these little Napoleonic python-esq weirdos far more than a girl has any right to, and if there was an aesthetic that fit my personality, it’s definitely something from the mind of Max Fitzgerald. So, if nothing else, this should highlight my excitement at actually getting this project moving forwards.

So, sitting down to stream, I got my miliput and greenstuff mixed and began the task of modelling ~35 heads for my list. getting pikes ready, and finally putting some arms (and tentacles) onto some Toadies.

The goal is to field the most basic of lists, as I haven’t even decided on a cult yet. That meas I have a Toff, 2 Toadies, a unit of Chaff, one of Brutes, and two of Fodder. Going basic so that I can eventually expand out into whatever I wish. I don’t have many games in which I’d like to ‘collect’ the whole line, but gosh I think Turnip28 might do that for me…

Sufficed to say – this might be my wargame of choice. Unfortunately, at present I think I might be the only one in my local scene who’s working on this. I might need to start a movement…. something everyone loves to hear from a transfemme…

This begins my Parsnip Pushing, 42nd Higgles of Piggledy. May their roots run deep, and their victories come before tea-time.

  • Today being a stream day there wasn’t a lot of hobbying done in the AM. I did start reading The Black Hack in order to get myself in the head space for the currently-ongoing Black Hack 10th Anniversary Jam so look out for that in the next few weeks.

After stream I did get a fairly big win. After arm twisting (figurative), nagging (literate), and charisma rolls (nonexistent) I managed to get my lovely partner Holly to the game table. I dug through my collection of built-but-not-yet-painted miniatures and found her a collection of Skaven (and one surprise ‘normal-ish’ rat) to play me in Greathelm. Now when it comes to tabletop games, teaching your significant other can be tricky, tabletop wargaming especially.

Holly herself has had very littler interest in tabletop games, even going so far to be unable to play TTRPGs due to some significant burnout from her previous group. I have had luck with typical board games like Hive and Tiny Epic Galaxies, so I judged Greathelm as a good start to her wargaming experiences — I sure as heck wasn’t going to throw her into Battletech straight up.

She did fantastically, and honestly I can’t wait to start introducing more of the rules to her as we get more games in. She had fun, I loved playing with my partner, and unsurprisingly, she won. I think I’m going to start building her ‘ratties’ out a bit more, maybe add some shields, perhaps a sword, to some of the minis. I’ll get her input on some paint schemes for them too but honestly, if Skaven is all it takes, well worth the price of admission.

Not sure how others have gone teaching their partners — and given that I’m in a lesbian relationship the dynamics might be different again — but if you’re looking for an entry point, you could do much worse than Greathelm. You can pick up the rules here and there’s even a free quickstart, or go give Malev Da Shinobi some love. His work is super fun, I’m planning giving his Convict Combat game a try in the future..

  • Today is Gaslands day. I start my escalation league at 30pts with a couple of fun little cars and (hopefully) some wild dice rolls. I don’t have much time in the AM to get hobby stuff together — my Sundays typically are taken up with GTD weekly review stuff, and checking that I’m moving along nicely with my post-graduate writing — so I’ll update post-game.

Gaslands was far more exciting and engaging than I expected. It may have been me coming into it thinking I was going to be experiencing something more akin to a boardgame than a wargame, or it could be the fact that I was playing on such a large table with just two small matchbox cars, but it was by no means simple.

Every gear shift of every round mattered, the games ‘risk’ mechanic of hazard tokens built far faster than I expected, leading me to spin out quite a few times. Even the way collisions both with other cars and the terrain surprised me. It was high speed, but still deeply strategic, and for a 30 can (30 point list) game, I can see how this game grows and scales. I’ll give it a few more weeks, but honestly, this may be one of my favourite wargames of recent memory.

The wrap up had both my and my opponents buggies loosing our roll cages, getting 5 ‘dings’ (how the game tracks a car’s ‘injury’) each as well — mostly because I wrecked his, and he exploded mine. To be fair though, I did have 5 unused Molotov cocktails which don’t take kindly to being slammed at high speeds into a wall.

The next game bumps us up to 40 cans and, given that I have 11 to spend, I am thinking of saving up for another round to throw in some high-speed nonsense. Now to write a list, format the permanent injuries, and maybe even finish painting my movement templates.

Seriously, if you haven’t played Gaslands yet, the barrier to entry is so cheap and well worth it.

  • Today I stumbled across the Turnip28 “Off the Rails” challenge that’s being run and I immediately leapt into gear. The gist of it is we’re to create a Scab Steam Engine consisting of an engine and between one and three carriages, each based individually (or not based, depending on how you’re running it).

Effectively we’re building an engine to breach the surface into the Turnip28 world from the Pfish folk of the underworld. Their tech is powered by a sentient oil known as ‘Swill’, and the two factions in this challenge utilise these swill-powered locomotives to breach the surface. These factions (teams), The Overground and The Underground, basically take on the roles of industrialists obsessed with progress no matter the cost, and the engineers and navvy plumbing the depths of the world before they make their ascent. I’ve elected to go with The Underground as there’s a lot of fun pro-union things I can do with that setting, but that’s about where I’m at with it.

Anyone keen on joining in, please check out the patreon post announcing the bash here.

Soon I’ll be printing up four big bases to start tinkering with, this should be a pretty fantastic kitbash if nothing else. I’m wanting to develop those skills.

I’ve spent part of my afternoon trying to find the perfect base size. I’ve settled on 100x60mm square for each component, it’s something I can print easily on my Vyper — I need to come up with a less edgy name for the 3d printer — and isn’t too big it becomes out of scale for the rest of my Turnip28 collection. Speaking of which, my next crafting stream this upcoming Tuesday, I’m going to do a bunch of sculpting for my turnip 28 army. I want to have something table ready soon so that I can start teaching folks how to play and maybe get a bit of a local scene happening…

A girl can dream at least.
