Today being a stream day there wasn’t a lot of hobbying done in the AM. I did start reading The Black Hack in order to get myself in the head space for the currently-ongoing Black Hack 10th Anniversary Jam so look out for that in the next few weeks.

After stream I did get a fairly big win. After arm twisting (figurative), nagging (literate), and charisma rolls (nonexistent) I managed to get my lovely partner Holly to the game table. I dug through my collection of built-but-not-yet-painted miniatures and found her a collection of Skaven (and one surprise ‘normal-ish’ rat) to play me in Greathelm. Now when it comes to tabletop games, teaching your significant other can be tricky, tabletop wargaming especially.

Holly herself has had very littler interest in tabletop games, even going so far to be unable to play TTRPGs due to some significant burnout from her previous group. I have had luck with typical board games like Hive and Tiny Epic Galaxies, so I judged Greathelm as a good start to her wargaming experiences — I sure as heck wasn’t going to throw her into Battletech straight up.

She did fantastically, and honestly I can’t wait to start introducing more of the rules to her as we get more games in. She had fun, I loved playing with my partner, and unsurprisingly, she won. I think I’m going to start building her ‘ratties’ out a bit more, maybe add some shields, perhaps a sword, to some of the minis. I’ll get her input on some paint schemes for them too but honestly, if Skaven is all it takes, well worth the price of admission.

Not sure how others have gone teaching their partners — and given that I’m in a lesbian relationship the dynamics might be different again — but if you’re looking for an entry point, you could do much worse than Greathelm. You can pick up the rules here and there’s even a free quickstart, or go give Malev Da Shinobi some love. His work is super fun, I’m planning giving his Convict Combat game a try in the future..
