Den of cozy recycled crafting

  • Hoping that it’s not going to jinx me in some way, but I actually had a good day today. I managed to not just hit the longest I’ve streamed so far playing Guild Wars 2. Now that I’m well-and-truly into the affiliate space, I’m certainly going to be increasing my hours.

Today I got the paintbrushes out for the first time in a week, and gosh it was lovely. I’m working on two more of my Legitimate Salvage crew (which I still need to get the character sheets sorted for). The first (left two) is going to be a red suited soldier, the second (right two) is going to be our doctor with pale skin, leather jacket, and other bits. I’m just getting some colour blocking down before more detail work tomorrow.

  • It’s been a full week, and honestly, I wish I managed to get more painting done. Today I was feeling the tail end of the post-migraine hangover and, while playing a ttrpg session online (Pathfinder 2e) I put together the entire Stargrave Automatons box ready for Legitimate Salvage.

That’s 20 little borg-like servitors ready to be enemies on the gaming table.

Tomorrow I’m back at the painting desk on stream, I’m planning to lock-in a little more and focus on the Crew for Legitimate Salvage and get at least one or two table ready. I think I’ll even do some re-writing of the intro and the like ready to be recorded for an upcoming project.

  • Today’s a good day. I think my migraine is finally starting to break — I’ve spent the day in significant postdrome, but I had enough energy to finish off the Genestealers and get some paint on them.

Not long of an update today, but I’m enjoying feeling like I’ve done something.

  • Almost didn’t make it today. Each day of this challenge beyond the first has had a strong colouring of pain and fatigue. I absolutely knew I’d need to account for my spoonie nature through my own challenge rules, I just hadn’t expected to need them literally from day 2.

I was a little more productive today though. I had spent the day passed out in bed where I could and gently drifting between kitchen to sofa to keep myself hydrated. The afternoon I made a trip to the store in order to get things for dinner and to increase my stockpile of paracetamol and ibuprofen. That gave me a little push to put 30min on my pomodoro timer and get to making.

Day 3 of making these Genestealers, and honestly building this box has reminded me how much I adore the Tyranid design. I need to get these goobers painted and playing asap. I don’t want to play 40k, so I’m going to have to try and see if I can drum up some local interest in OPR.

That’s 8 of 10 built. Tomorrow I plan to finish the last 2 and base them. I may not paint them anytime soon, but it’s fun to start getting some projects planned.

  • Still real heavy migraine day. I couldn’t get to my mini painting yet, but got two more Genestealers built. 5/10 done.

Honestly, sitting and scraping mold lines, tidying up the sprue remnants, and gluing together is oddly meditative when your brain throbs. I do want to see where these end up after a good zenithal highlight and some detail work.

I’m thinking maybe Hive Fleet Jormungandr would be a cool scheme to work with. I already have a bunch of sandy and dark colours, so should work well.

Hoping future Moxxie has some good ol’ pain-free fun.

  • Migraine was worse today, but I kept going. Progress is progress is progress. I think my favourite thing about this hobby is the lack of screens — doing something away from the screen is deeply important to me.

Not a huge update today, decided to do some work at my computer desk while listening to my partner’s stream. I have a box of Tyranid Genestealers from when I thought I might get into 10th Edition 40K. They’ve been sitting on the shelf for a while and I thought that they’d be good for something like One Page Rules. More than that though, I thought it could be fun to use some Games Workshop miniatures to showcase my painting ability for potential commission slots I’ll open in the next month or so.

Back to the migraine-mines. Hopefully it’ll clear up in the next day or so. Look after yourselves everyone!

  • What do you know, day 2 and I come down with a godsdamned migraine. I managed to get a little bit done, which was AMAZING, but I could’ve used a save point today. Who knows, maybe this will help me focus on migraine days.

So, to what I did. I set myself the goal to finish making my mini for “Smash”, an android character I rolled on stream for an upcoming Legitimate Salvage project I’m working on. The thing about Smash is that they’re effectively a robot wearing a bikini, and is completely genderless – though despite this, or perhaps because of it, every single one of their crew (the magenta figures in the background) find themselves unexpectedly attracted to them.

That didn’t take me the full 30 mins, so I got back into my Dark Age Warriors from yesterday, putting together 3 spear men, an axe man, a swordsman, and two javelineers. It’s such a versatile kit, and I’m aiming for 8 of each (7 swordsman, one will have a battle-horn and act as a “leader” of sorts. Still not sure what game this will be for, but with this layout, I think I could play a game of 28mm Blade Wrath once it gets to my door. At the very least it’ll help me decide on a paint scheme for my 15mm army.

Something I thought would be fun to do, would be to show off what I’m listening to on these 30-min streak-sessions. Today I was working my way through my podcast backlog which has built up over the last few weeks. Today it was Episode 107 of The Mechbay podcast. I’m super excited for the new rulebook for BattleTech and am eating up any and all discussions around the place. If you’re interested in BT, play it, or are somewhat curious, these guys are pretty great, podcast wise.

Tonight I’ve got my Lancer group, otherwise I’d spend a little more time base coating or the like, but alas, my time is short today. Let’s hope tomorrow brings more hobby success!

  • I’m back in the blog space for my hobby streak stuff. Hooray!

So yeah, I dropped off the face of the earth there a little — honestly, I just ended up spending more time putting effort into posting these hobby streaks on BlueSky and not really talking too much about them here. It’s not great, and doesn’t really show my writing skills. Heck, it even just made me focus more on my phone, which isn’t ideal for hobby time. So here we are.

Firstly, here’s Hobby Streak 1 (attempt #3). Today, after hearing the sad news about Gripping Beast Plastics, I thought getting my box of Dark Age Warriors put together for some generic warriors, bandits, vikings, etc. It’s always good to have a good variety of miniatures, especially while I’m trying to get into more solo wargaming things.

I was also going to do a “day 0” post today, explaining what the Hobby Streak is for me, how I’ll be handling it, and whatnot. Instead, I’m going to be outlining it below for you all, and if this is something you’d also like to engage with, it’s right there for you too.

So What is this ‘Hobby Streak’ thing?

Inspired by Liam Durr on BlueSky, he’s the Hobby Streak guy after all. His original post can be found here.

    The original Hobby Streak Rules were as follows;

    • At least 30 mins hobby each day.
    • Take a pic of your daily activity.
    • Use #hobbystreakday1
    • Build up your personal best of concurrent hobby days in a streak
    • Any break in the streak resets the clock & you’re back to day one.
    • Challenge yourself to beat your previous PB set.
    • Chip away at current projects.
    • Encourage & inspire each other.

I’ll be adjusting them slightly to meet my own needs some, as I’m a bit of a chronic migraine/fatigue girlie and sometimes it’s important to let yourself adjust things as you need them.

    So here’s the rules for Moxxie’s Hobby Streak;

    • At least 30 mins hobby each day.
    • Hobby can consist of building, painting, playing, or writing in relation to tabletop wargaming and tabletop rpgs.
    • Take a picture, write a blog post, and if applicable, record a time-lapse of my daily activities.
    • Use #HobbyStreak and #HobbyStreakDayX when posting.
    • Build up concurrent hobby days in a streak
    • Every 14 days of streak gets you 1 ‘save point’. Save points can be cashed in to keep a streak going on a missed day.
    • Challenge yourself to top your personal best.
    • Chip away at projects, naming what it is you’re working on.
    • Encourage & Inspire others

I really love this challenge, and I can’t wait to get back to the desk, get myself some finished projects, and show off how well everything goes!

  • So, yesterday didn’t get a post because I was (and still am) deeply unwell with some sort of horrid flu thing. I’m getting there, but I think today might be a minimal hobby day.

At 9pm I started to feel a little better and started to paint up my Turnip army. I’m going with a deeply red/orange themed paint scheme. I think the Higgles of Piggledy have a fascination with red earth and the blood of their friends and foes. I imagine after a battle they all jump in a big pile and roll around in the blood and earth in some sort of wild celebration.

I’ll get the lore a little further into the lore when I’m not feverish and having real deep bone aches.

Best of luck to you all on avoiding this thing!

  • Today was a day of driving, driving, family, driving, and of course, driving. I took my partner to visit my hometown for the first time, spend some time with my brother and his kids, as well as my mum.

Honestly, wonderful to experience nostalgia for the place I grew up, and a complete reaffirmation that I, under no circumstances, will ever live there again.

Luckily however, I did manage to play a quick game of “Tallest Goblin.”

For those unfamiliar with Tallest Goblin, it’s a game by Billion Dollar Clown Farm and the rules are tremendously simple.

To play, you need is 1 goblin and height. During the deployment phase (the only phase) you simply needed to place your goblin in the tallest place possible and take a photo. If your goblin is taller than everyone else in the world’s you win; if not, that’s okay.

This was something Billion did in 2024, for a competition, and I recently saw Trent play this with some friends in his Permadeath Hobby Blog and as he’s a massive inspiration to me and what I do, I felt it was something I could play and compete against my own PB in.

So here goes, entry the first, 898.68 m (2948.44 ft.) above sea level.
